What is Xarelto?

Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) is a prescription anticoagulant medication that prevents the formation of blood clots by blocking certain clotting proteins in blood.

What’s the history behind the drug?

Xarelto was first approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 to reduce blood clots during hip or knee surgery, then approved to be prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) to reduce the risk of stroke. One year later, Xarelto was approved to prevent and treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer Healthcare and marketed in the U.S. by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary.

In 2013, Xarelto started direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing.  Later that same year, the Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP) of the FDA sent a letter notifying that this direct-to-consumer (DTC) print advertisement for Xarelto® was “false or misleading because it minimizes the risks associated with Xarelto and makes a misleading claim.

The class-action lawsuit

The Xarelto lawsuit filed against the manufacturer of Xarelto and the co-marketer Bayer Healthcare states these companies failed to warn patients and physicians of the increased risks of fatal internal bleeding when using Xarelto. If these companies had warned of the risks, then physicians and patients could make better healthcare decisions, such as prescribing warfarin (the brand name Coumadin, a trusted anticoagulant). The lawsuit also points out that Xarelto was defectively designed, and the manufacturer and co-marketers failed to update the drug’s warning labels in a timely manner.

Why is it dangerous?

The blood-thinner, Xarelto, that can cause uncontrolled internal bleeding.  Serious internal bleeding can be fatal. Because no antidote exists to reverse its blood-thinning effects, Xarelto may be more dangerous than traditional blood thinners because no antidote exists to reverse its blood-thinning effects.

Internal bleeding from Xarelto may include:

  • Severe, unexpected, or uncontrollable bleeding
  • Pink or brown urine, or red or black stools
  • Bruises with unknown cause
  • Coughing up, or vomiting blood
  • Unexpected pain in the area of the body where internal bleeding may occur
  • Swelling, joint pain, headaches, dizziness, weakness
